Substitution
In a substitution level, teachers or students are only using new technology tools to replace a more traditional one. For instance, using Google Docs or Google Slides to replace writing an essay on paper. The task (writing) is the same, but the tools are different. Augmentation The technology is again directly substituted for a traditional one, but with significant enhancements to the student experience. In other words, the technology increases or augments a student's productivity and potential in some way. Keeping with the same writing task example, when using Google Docs or Slides, students can take advantage of the added functionality, such as auto saving, revision history, undo, spellcheck, dictionary, text-to-speech, voice typing, inserting images, highlighting, changing size and font, and more. |
Modification
In this stage, you are beginning to move from enhancement to transformation on the model. Instead of replacement or enhancement, this is an actual change to the design of the lesson and its learning outcome. Does the technology significantly alter the task? Students can post their writing piece on a blog, where feedback can be received and incorporated to help improve the quality of their writing, or maybe students can produce a podcast about their topic, which can then be accessed by other students as a revision resource. Another example is students create an informative video presentation in place of a standard oral presentation. They can use their voice alongside a broader variety of creative multimodal components.

Redefinition
If you are to place this level in Blooms revised taxonomy pyramid, it would probably correspond to synthesis and evaluation as being the highest order thinking skills. "Redefinition means that students use technology to create imperceptibly new tasks." One example is having students use Google Earth to create narrated guided tours of historical sites and share them with others beyond their classroom. Another example is students can use Screencastify or Animoto to create a book trailer. They can work together with the library media specialist in the school to turn the URL of their book trailer into a QR code, and post the QR code into the 'hard copy' book jacket for any student to scan and access the trailer.
Keep in mind... Redefinition is at the top of the SAMR model, but that doesn’t mean that you “win” or that you’re doing it right only if you reach redefinition. Great learning can happen without redefinition.
